Given the barely-controlled aggression evident as the starting whistles blew last weekend and those vast, fast and horribly determined players swarmed toward one another, one would be forgiven for thinking that its use was dripping with irony. But that’s the joy of rugby and this tournament in particular: it is, with only very rare exceptions, played by and in front of people whose competitive instincts and passion for the game are based wholly on mutual respect. What pride could be taken in winning were this not the case?
