In Good Hands: Jerome Ingle-Smith

Off Savile Row, Jerome is assistant manager of Oliver Brown, watching over an aspirational and growing collection of luxury menswear.  Mostly characterised by his enthusiastic, Irish accent, his energy and knowledge of the craft is perhaps the most memorable part of anyone’s visit to Oliver Brown.

Jerome worked as a coatmaker for many years. Having been trained by a ‘legendary coat maker’ called Mr.Chow, Jerome studied under one of the best. Mr.Chow was a Shanghainese tailor, trained in Hong Kong and then worked for the Royal Navy. He was one of the first tailors to come onto the London scene of tailoring from China. Jerome was one of Mr.Chow’s first apprentices and was guided through the trade and techniques to coatmaking in accordance with Savile Row practices. Thereafter, Jerome did a lot of work on Saville row and went on to making a living that way.

With a family history in tailoring in Ireland and a master tailor great grandfather, coatmaking was in his blood. Ever since a young age, when business got busy, his family would take him out of school to go and help in the family trade. However, in 2018, Jerome decided to go to front of house. In dealing with customers, he got a well rounded exposure of the client’s view into tailoring.

Richard, the general manager of Oliver Brown, offered Jerome a job at Oliver Brown. He was someone Jerome had heard of amongst Saville Row chat and immediately took up the position with Oliver Brown and at the busiest time of the year, no less… Royal Ascot week.

Jerome deems Oliver Brown, “…the only true classic menswear operation in the UK at the moment”. Staying true to traditional British menswear and tailoring, Oliver Brown products are easy to sell to aspirational and sartorially astute clientele. Jerome confidently married the Oliver Brown customer to an educated, well-spoken and fashion conscious character. Since joining, Oliver Brown is poised to expand across London and over three years has rapidly expanded it’s online offering to national and international clientele.

With the up take of casual and comfort, we have seen a growing interest in more smart casual garments, separates, blazers and trouser options. Jerome confidently coined this ‘Zoom Wear’, Smart enough for a zoom call but comfortable enough to wear at home. We’ve adapted. One of the good things about us is that we try to cater to all of those requirements whether it be casual, extremely formal and everything in-between. This makes us the true menswear one stop shop in London and the United Kingdom.
