A cousin of 17th century neckties used to hold shirt collars together, the bow tie is not only black tie’s namesake but the pièce de résistance of your evening attire. Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin led the way, here we show you step-by-step how to tie your bow tie for guaranteed added panache to your eveningwear. 1: Place the bow tie around your neck, with the right side slightly longer, by about one and a half inches. 2: Cross the longer end over the shorter end. 3: Pass the longer end up and over the loop at the front of the neck. Let the longer end rest over your shoulder for now. 4: To create the front of the bow, pull the dangling end to the left and then fold it back over itself to the right. 5: Take the long end of the tie that has been sitting on your shoulder and place over the centre of the front wings you have just made. 6: Fold the long end back on itself to create the back part of the bow.7: Push the long end, folded end first, behind the front bow and though the loop. 8: Simultaneously pull both wings to tighten the knot, and straighten the tie by adjusting the ends of the bow. 9: IT’S A WRAP!
