Oliver Brown specialises in top hats offering a substantial collection of beautiful antiques and contemporary alternatives. Antique silk top hats are considered the height of beauty and elegance because of their impressive shine, shape and lightness, which is second to none. Made from a unique silk plush with a long nap, giving it the beautifully polished look, we recognise today, the looms that made this fabric are no longer in existence and general production has ceased. As a result, those in a pristine condition or a larger size can be very rare and fetch higher prices. This is a very personal choice of top hat, so we recommend you book an appointment to view the hats and have a fitting.

This circa 1840 white gold beaver fur top hat by Christy’s 'Best' make London is incredibly rare and in pristine condition. The hat comes complete with a letter of provenance and the original cardboard box, the condition for its age is absolutely stunning.

    Top Hats - A History

From the late 1700s and through the 1800s top hats were ubiquitous, with gentlemen of all classes wearing them. But during the early 20th century, with increasingly informal attire, top hats gradually became saved for more formal occasions. This tends to be the case today -
although in recent years the top hat has enjoyed a resurgence. Now, more than ever, modern gentleman regularly sport them for occasions such as the Derby, Royal Ascot, formal weddings and garden parties.
